Short answer

What makes good LED lighting for your headlight?

Good LED headlight bulbs have a focal point and lamp foot identical to the original lamp: a difference of only a fraction of a millimeter gives stray light and a lower light output. Hilox uses Philips LUXEON Z ES LEDs, which are only a few millimeters tall and give a very high light output, and removes the heat with copper strips and an aluminium housing.
  • Hilox tested several dimmed beam LEDs and saw big differences in price and light output.
  • Compared with a random brand bought on eBay, the Hilox LED shows a tighter beam with higher intensity.
  • A good light beam does not blind oncoming traffic.
  • LEDs get hot, so good heat dissipation is essential.

Choose for quality LED headlight bulbs

We from Hilox have tested several dimmed beam LED's in diverse headlights. We not only see a high price differences but high differences in light output. So, we eventually developed a LED that unites the best of both worlds. High quality for an affordable price with a good light image.

The difference

We compared a lower quality versus a good quality light beam: our Hilox LED against a random brand bought on ebay. The Hilox LED shows a tighter beam of light, which makes the intensity much higher and does not blind any opponents.

What makes a good light image?

The secret is in the focal point and the foot of the lamp. If these are identical to the original lamp, the light image is good. Differs this is only a fraction of a millimeter, you get guaranteed stray light and a lower light output.

Philips LUXEON Z LED

To ensure the best quality, we only use the best components. The Philips LUXEON Z ES Led's are only a few millimeters tall and give a very high light output. Also, these leds have won various tests, based on different criteria such as reliability, quality, light beam and heat regulation. More information about this can be read on the Lumileds automotive site and the LUXEON Z ES product page.

Cooling LED's

You will be amazed at how hot the leds can be, so the heat must be well removed. We use specially woven strips of red copper. This material ensures perfect heat dissipation and is easy to bend so that the leds fit well in the headlight housing. The housing of our Hilox leds is also made of aluminum, which allows for better heat dissipation.

How to recognize a quality LED for your headlight

You cannot see the quality of a LED lamp from the outside. These are the points to check before you buy.

1. The chips and their position

Look at which LED chips are used and how they are placed. Small, flat chips placed in a row on the LED body come closest to the size and position of the halogen filament. That is what determines whether the light image in your headlight stays tight. More about chip types in our research into LED low beam kits.

2. The cooling

LED chips produce heat at the back of the lamp. Without good cooling, the light output drops and the lifespan gets shorter. Cooling can be passive, with copper strips or aluminium, or active with a small fan. Check whether there is room for the cooling behind your headlight.

3. Adjustability

Because the position of the chips matters so much, a LED that you can rotate in the lamp foot makes it easier to get a clean light image in both reflector and lens headlights.

4. CAN-bus

Many modern cars check whether their lamps work. A LED uses less power than halogen, so without a CAN-bus solution the car may report a defective lamp. See our CAN-bus LEDs.

LED headlight bulbs in the current Hilox range

The H7 XTR Black LED kit, 5700K, Hilox Evolution is an example from the current range. According to the product information:

  • It uses Luxeon Z ES LED chips from Lumileds (Philips), which last up to 50,000 hours: 50 times longer than halogen and 12 times longer than xenon.
  • It gives 3600 lumen per lamp, 3.5 times more light than halogen, at 5700K.
  • A Smart Cool IC chip combined with a Maglev fan protects the LED chips against overheating.
  • The LED can be rotated 360 degrees to fine-tune the light image.
  • It is IP68 waterproof and comes with a CAN-bus II module per lamp.

After installation, have the light beam checked and make sure your car still meets the APK requirements. If in doubt, ask the RDW or your inspector. The Hilox product information states that LED lamps with an H fitting designation cannot obtain ECE approval and are intended for circuit and private terrain use only.

Frequently asked questions about LED headlight bulbs

What determines the light image of a LED headlight bulb?
The focal point and the foot of the lamp. If these are identical to the original lamp, the light image is good. A difference of only a fraction of a millimeter gives stray light and a lower light output.
Which LED chips does Hilox use?
Philips LUXEON Z ES LEDs. They are only a few millimeters tall, give a very high light output and have won various tests on reliability, quality, light beam and heat regulation.
Why do LED headlight bulbs need cooling?
LEDs can get very hot, so the heat must be removed well. Hilox uses specially woven strips of red copper and an aluminium housing for better heat dissipation.
What is the difference with a cheap LED?
In a comparison with a random brand bought on eBay, the Hilox LED showed a tighter beam of light with a much higher intensity that does not blind oncoming traffic.
