H7 LED low beam - Volvo V50 - Customer Review

If you've always driven xenon lighting and you buy a new car with halogen, you'll soon fall into a dark hole during your nightly rides. For this reason, the owner of this Volvo now has our H7 dipped-beam LEDs placed to experience the same, fun driving pleasure as with xenon.

Volvo V50 H7 LED: why did you choose an LED kit?

My choice for LED lighting came because I had xenon lighting in my previous car. This was original from factory and I was very pleased with the amount of light. My new car was equipped with halogen lighting and I was very concerned with how much light I had with it. First I searched for an aftermarket set xenon, but because of the possibility of interference, I have looked at other possibilities. Then my eye turned on LED lighting from Hilox. Because the new cars are now also provided with Led lighting and the light image is very good, I found it nice to try this new technique.

How was the H7 LED kit installed?

The installation is very simple! Because the LED lamp ring can be turned down, it is easy to install, then you only need to turn the lamp on. With the V50 models, the full headlights are easy to get out of the car, giving you more space. With my Volvo, the space for the cover is exactly 45mm, which means you have to bend the cooling strips well, but it fits without problems.

What do you think of the end result?

Because I was used to xenon for 4 years, I was somewhat critical about aftermarket lamps. But, now I am very satisfied. The lights give a nice light image, and what I think is important, I do not blind the oncoming traffic. In short, I am very pleased with the result and I can say that lamps are certainly not less than xenon.

Do you have any tips about buying and/or installing?

The online guide is clear, for example, you know what and how to measure everything, so you know how to order or whether the lamps fit in. One tip I can give is that if you are in doubt about your light output, you should definitely try this.

Pro Installation Tips: Install LED Kit

1. To install the H7 LED kit, you can loosen the base of the LED lamp, which makes the installation even easier. You first put the H7 foot into the headlight so that you can turn the LED into it.
2. And do you have too little space? Then, make sure that the deeper rubber housing caps enable installation.

At Volvo you can easily disassemble the headlight, which makes installing a piece of cake.

Pro Installation Tip: Adjusting the LEDs

Because the headlight itself does not change anything except the lamp, you do not have to reset the headlight in most cases. But nevertheless, it's wise to see if you do not blind oncoming traffic. Put your car with the standard lighting against a wall and draw a line along the light beam with a pencil. After installing the LEDs, check if this is the same.

What you should know about H7 LED low beam and LED city lights

This Volvo owner went from factory xenon to halogen and then to LED. If you are considering the same step, these are the points that matter.

Interference and CAN-bus

The owner looked at aftermarket xenon first, but was put off by the possibility of interference. Many modern cars check through CAN-bus whether their lamps work. A LED lamp uses less power than a halogen lamp, so without a CAN-bus solution the car may report a defective lamp. Light output compared with xenon

The owner found the LED lamps certainly not less than xenon. According to the product information, the H7 XTR Black gives 3600 lumen per lamp, 3.5 times more light than halogen, at 5700K. Its Luxeon Z ES chips last up to 50,000 hours, which is 12 times longer than xenon.

Space behind the headlight

In this V50 the space for the cover was exactly 45mm. Measure the depth behind your headlight before you order, and check whether the driver and CAN-bus module can be placed. A deeper rubber housing cap can help when space is tight.

LED city lights

Next to the low beam, the owner also used a LED city light. A white LED city light fits better with a white low beam than a yellowish halogen bulb. The T10/W5W 9-SMD Power LED Hilox Evolution II is a CAN-bus LED with 9 Samsung LED chips at 5500K, which according to the product information matches well with 4300K, 5000K and 6000K. It lasts up to 30,000 hours and is sold as a set of 2. It can also be used for number plate and interior lighting.

After installation, have the light beam checked and make sure your car still meets the APK requirements. If in doubt, ask the RDW or your inspector. The Hilox product information states that these LED lamps have no ECE approval and are intended for circuit and private terrain use only.
