Short answer

How does LED low beam work out in a Porsche Cayenne?

This customer review of LED low beam in a Porsche Cayenne shows that the H7 LED bulbs give a nice white light (not blue) and look very classy. They are brighter than halogen, although the customer had hoped for even more light output.
  • The customer chose LED over xenon because of the better price and the easier installation.
  • Porsche's iron mounting clip has to be ground round on the inside, for example with a Dremel.
  • This clip cannot be bought separately from the dealer, so work carefully.
  • The CANBUS modules did not need to be connected.

A gorgeous car without good (and good-looking) lighting is a real shame. Our customer with this beautiful Porsche Cayenne thought so too. An LED low beam upgrade is the answer for this car, and now the picture is complete!

LED low beam in a Porsche Cayenne: why did you choose an LED kit?

I was looking for a bulb that would not only give more light but also change the look of my Cayenne. I find halogen lighting old-fashioned and cheap-looking, and it certainly does not suit a modern car like a Porsche Cayenne. That deserves a crisp, clean white low beam. I then had the choice between xenon lighting and LED lighting. I weighed up the pros and cons of xenon and LED against each other and chose LED because of the better price and the easier installation.

How did the installation of the H7 LED kit go?

The installation was actually fairly simple. Porsche uses an iron mounting clip to hold the original H7 bulb in the headlight unit. You need this clip again to mount the LED bulb, but the inside of the clip is square and the LED bulb is round, so it has to be adapted. You need to grind away a little from the inside of the clip, with a Dremel for example, so that you end up with a round hole the LED bulb fits through. This is fairly easy and can be done accurately.

Next, you unscrew the removable plastic ring from the LED bulb and remove the small rubber ring underneath. You no longer need this rubber ring. Then you click the clip onto the plastic ring. Before you can screw this together onto the LED bulb, you first need to bend the tabs on the underside of the clip outwards with a pair of pliers, so they do not touch the LED bulb.

Then you screw the clip and the plastic ring tight onto the LED bulb and you can fit everything back. I did not have to connect the CANBUS modules.

LED kit used

Suitable for all Porsches

Want a Hilox LED kit like this in your Porsche, or do you drive another make? You can! Hilox LED kits fit pretty much any car, young, old, big or small. All you need is a left and a right hand (installing an LED kit is really easy, so you do not strictly need two right hands!) and an LED kit with the right fitting. Not sure which fitting your car has? Check our fitting finder or get in touch with us.

What do you think of the end result?

The LED bulbs give a nice white light (not blue) and it looks very classy. The bulbs are brighter than the halogen bulbs, but not as bright as I had hoped. Perhaps that will be possible in future with all the developments.

Do you have any tips for buying and/or installing?

The Porsche mounting clip cannot be bought separately from the dealer, so be careful with the Dremel and do not break it. The online manual is clear, and it also tells you what to measure and how, so you know before ordering whether the bulbs will fit. One tip I can give: if you are in doubt about the light output, you should definitely give it a try.

Pro installation tips: installing an LED kit

1. When installing the H7 LED kit you can unscrew the base of the LED bulb, which makes installation even easier. First fix the H7 base in the headlight, then simply screw the LED into it.

2. Short on space? See whether the deeper rubber housing caps make the installation possible.

Pro installation tip: aligning LED low beams

Because nothing changes on the headlight itself except the bulb, in most cases you do not need to realign the headlight. Even so, it is wise to check that you are not dazzling oncoming drivers. Park your car with the standard lighting against a wall and use a pencil or marker to draw a line along the cut-off line of the beam. After installing the LEDs, check whether it is still the same.
