Short answer
Will the LED fit your headlight? Measure first
Always check whether there's enough room in the headlight unit before you order the LED kit. The XTR LEDs need at least 36 mm of room, for H4, H13 and HB5 that is 38 mm.
Not enough room after all? Take a look at our rubber housing caps, or at our alternative in xenon: the Hilox Evolution xenon kits.
Which fitting is in your headlight?
You'll find the fitting in the service booklet or manual of your car, motorbike or truck. It's also printed on the bulb itself.
When do you install the CAN-bus module?
First install the LEDs without the CAN-bus module, start the engine and switch the lights on. If the kit works without error messages or faults, you don't need the modules. If you get an error message or the LEDs don't work properly, install the CAN-bus modules.
Does your vehicle have a start-stop system or PWM? The XTR LEDs weren't specially developed for that. In that case install the modules even without an error message: that way you prevent the LEDs from failing early.
The CAN-bus modules only come with the Evolution LED kits.
The step-by-step guide
- Take off the headlight's dust cover and measure the distance from the base of the bulb to the dust cover. If that is more than 36 mm (for H4, H13 and HB5 38 mm), the XTR LED will fit without problems.
- Less room? See whether one of our rubber housing caps is an option; they come in different diameters. If you don't have a round dust cover, the 52 mm housing cap is a good alternative: it fits almost any housing.
- Take the standard filament bulb out of the headlight.
- Connect the LED to the power supply of the low beam, high beam or fog light.
- Switch the lights on and check that the LEDs work properly and that no error message appears on the dashboard. If it does, fit the supplied CAN-bus modules (Evolution kits only).
- With some fittings, such as H7, it's handy to first detach the base of the LED, place it in the headlight and fix it, and then screw the LED back in.
Do you have an H4 fitting?
An H4 bulb fits into the headlight in two ways, but is only installed correctly in one: the thicker side of the LED belongs at the bottom. Fit it the other way round and the LED shines upwards, so you may dazzle oncoming traffic.
