Short answer

Which LED lighting should you choose for your car?

This car LED lighting buying guide goes through every light unit and tells you which LED to pick, from low beam to reversing light. The big dividing line is whether your car has CAN-bus: a car with CAN-bus keeps an eye on the bulbs and flags a dead one on the dashboard.
  • There is an LED for almost every bulb unit on your car.
  • If your car has low and high beam in a single bulb, pick a Bi-LED in H4, H13 or HB5.
  • A white LED daytime running light stands out better than a yellowish halogen bulb.
  • LED number plate lights last up to 15 times longer than standard bulbs.

LED lighting for your car: plenty has been said about it and there are countless products online. Can't see the wood for the trees in LED land? Then read this car LED buying guide.

LED bulbs for cars exist for almost every bulb unit. Which fitting you need for which unit is in our overview of LED low beam and high beam.

Car LED lighting buying guide: what to look out for

Why choose LED now, and what should you watch for? To keep things simple, at Hilox we split LEDs into 2 groups.

  1. Cars with CAN-bus
  2. Cars without CAN-bus

1. LED for cars with CAN-bus

First, what CAN-bus is and what it does. CAN-bus stands for Controller Area Network, a standard for serial data transmission between components. Lots of expensive words for something simple: this computer switches the bulbs on and checks that they still work. Is a bulb dead? Then your dashboard tells you about it.

When do you use your low beam?

The law says you may use low beam in the daytime when visibility is poor. At night, low beam is mandatory. You don't need low beam when your fog lights are on. Run low beam and front fog lights at the same time and the reflection of your own low beam may dazzle you.

LED high beam

Most cars have separate low and high beams, and a few have both in a single bulb. If your car has them separate, you can fit LED for the high beam too, usually H7 and H1. The upside: unlike xenon, the lights are at full strength straight away, and they have a lovely white colour. Keep in mind that you need to install an LED kit for both low beam and high beam. You can also choose to go LED on the low beam only.

If your car has high and low beam in one bulb, life is a lot easier: special Bi-LEDs are available for the H4, H13 and HB5 fittings.

LED bulbs per fitting

LED bulbs for low and high beam come in these fittings:

  • H3 LEDs
  • H4 LEDs
  • H7 LEDs
  • H8 LEDs
  • H9 LEDs
  • H10 LEDs
  • H13 LEDs
  • HB3/9005 LEDs
  • HB4/9006 LEDs
  • HB5/9007 LEDs
  • HIR2/9012 LEDs

LED fog lights

This light unit gives you a few options. You can of course use your LED fog lights as fog lights, but you can also convert them into daytime running lights. Special relays are available that dim the fog lights, or switch them off completely, when you turn on your low beam.

LED daytime running lights

Since 2012, manufacturers have been required to fit cars with daytime running lights, a rule meant to improve road safety. With daytime running lights you are seen sooner and better, which lowers the risk of an accident. Many manufacturers chose a halogen bulb for the job. We at Hilox don't think that looks great. On top of that, a white LED stands out far better than a yellowish halogen bulb. We have a range of LED daytime running light bulbs available.

Complete daytime running light modules are available too. These universal modules are fairly easy to mount in the bumper of your car. Do make sure the daytime running lights dim or switch off when the low beam is turned on.

LED parking lights

The LED bulbs for parking lights are by far the most ordered accessory alongside an LED kit or xenon kit. We stock several fittings, with the T10/W5W the most common. The BA9S and BA9XS fittings also turn up regularly in the parking light unit.

LED turn signals

You wouldn't expect it, but the bulbs in your turn signals can be swapped for LED indicator bulbs too ;-). There are loads of models in different brightness levels and colours. LEDs light up the lens of the turn signal unit both directly and indirectly.

LED number plate lights

Your number plate has to be clearly visible at all times, and since the standard bulbs often don't live up to their lifespan promise, you may as well replace them with durable LEDs. LED number plate lights are available in various fittings and sizes. The T10 and C5W fittings come up most often.

So LED number plate lights aren't just swapped in because they look better: LEDs also last up to 15 times longer than standard bulbs.

LED interior lighting

The LED bulbs for interior lighting are almost standard on the newest cars. They give the car a more upmarket feel, and you simply get a lot more light. Very handy when your passenger needs to read a book or fish something out of that deep glovebox.

LED reversing lights

Reversing is a skill of its own, and it helps if other road users can see that you are going backwards. LED reversing lights are not just brighter but also easier to see, which makes a little accident a lot less likely. Reversing LEDs come in various fittings, such as the BAU15S and the dual-function LED in the BAU15D fitting.
